LTE and 5G Device Categories, From NB-IoT to 5G NR

LTE and 5G Device Categories, From NB-IoT to 5G NR

Every cellular module datasheet has a category on it, and that one label decides a lot. It sets how fast the device can go, how many antennas it needs, how hard the RF front end has to work, and what the design costs. Yet it’s often the most misunderstood line in the spec.

Here is simple explanation of each categories and its specifications:

How to Read the Numbers

Three quick ground rules before exploring the categories:

  • Peak throughput is a ceiling, not a promise: The category peak assumes the network configures full bandwidth, the maximum MIMO layers and the highest modulation, with ideal radio conditions and an empty cell. Real-world speeds are lower because of signal quality, cell load and protocol overhead.
  • The category sets throughput, and the power class sets Tx power: For almost everything in this article that means Power Class 3, which is 23 dBm at maximum, with a band-dependent tolerance. Actual output can be lower depending on modulation and resource-block allocation. The exceptions are the LPWA classes (20 and 14 dBm) and PC2 (26 dBm) on selected TDD bands.
  • The category doesn’t define bands: Two modules with the same category can support very different frequency sets, so always check the regional variant. For carrier aggregation categories, also check the supported band combinations, because those decide what you’ll actually get on your operator’s network.

Explore Cellular Categories

Select any category below to view when to choose it, target applications, its 3GPP specifications, and the corresponding Cavli module example.

Choosing a category

Choosing a cellular category is fundamentally about managing trade-offs. Step down the ladder, and you gain years of battery life, deeper signal penetration, and a leaner bill of materials. Step up, and you get pure speed—though it comes at the price of complex RF design and higher silicon costs. 5G RedCap now lands neatly in the sweet spot between LPWA and high-tier 5G, making that choice far more straightforward. At the end of the day, the best module isn’t the one with the biggest numbers on the datasheet; it’s the one tailored perfectly to the job at hand.

At Cavli Wireless, we provide a wide range of products across each category to match your specific deployment requirements.

Note: Since 3GPP Release 12, downlink and uplink categories can be declared separately. Extended categories like Cat 9, 12, 16, and 20 represent high-tier LTE carrier aggregation traditionally used in smartphone silicon and as safety net anchors for 5G devices.
